This verse, “Blood, Fire and Pillars of Smoke” has always intrigued me. It’s a verse taken from the Book of Joel and also the Book of Acts about an event before the Great and Terrible Day of the Lord. “ ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ “ Acts 2:17-21
The Coming Elijah
Both the Old and the New Testaments speak of a coming Elijah. Who is this man? Jesus says that John the Baptist was the Elijah that came before His ministry, but hinted that there would be another one before His 2nd Coming. “And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.” Mark 9:11-13
