There is a consistent thread running through the bible and that is that mankind has been given power in their words for good and bad. It tells us in Genesis 1:26 that were made in the image of God. God created all things by the power of His words and speaking out creative words is also a big part in our lives. This makes us different to animals for we can speak intelligent creative words.
Whether you are a Christian or not there is power in your words, for the bible says;
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21
Unfortunately most people (even Christians) don’t believe that this is true and speak careless words. The Devil knows it too and blinds us to this truth telling us that it’s no big deal to watch what you say. Most people speak negative and destructive words that will produce death in the long run. Through words we can end up in self-destruct mode. When you listen to many little children today you hear words that make the air turn blue. From an early age they are being taught to speak carelessly and it brings about such destruction to them and others. I have even seen clips on social media of parents videoing their small children using the’ f word’ and are proud of it.
Even the Patriarchs of old (who were not born again) knew the power of words. We see Isaac pronouncing a blessing over Jacob who obtained it by deceit, yet once it had been spoken over him it could not be reversed. We later see Jacob declare that the one who had stolen Laban’s idols would die, not knowing that his wife Rachel had hidden them in her possessions. She died soon after in childbirth.
The Devil works overtime to blind us to the truth about our words and so keep us as victims in life rather than victors.
The other day I was really under attack, health wise. I was in a lot of pain with consequent oppression from the enemy. I have been encouraged in the past to seek the Lord first as my Healer and Doctor and not run to man straight away every time something is wrong with my body. It keeps me more dependent upon God as my source. I decided to fast a bit so as to quieten the shouting of my flesh and try and hear want God was saying. I am preparing to go on a ministry trip to the UK in a few weeks but felt that if I couldn’t get the victory in this I would not be able to go. I was crying out to God to come and fix me but nothing was happening. I eventually heard the Spirit say; “You already have the answer and its in your mouth. You can speak your way out of this.” I had previously been given a verse from the bible that I had forgotten about.
“..The mouth of the upright will deliver them.” Proverbs 12:6. Your words can rescue you.
I began to use my words to steer myself out of this problem. James says that our words are like a rudder and we can use them to steer ourselves out of trouble. Further on in this chapter it says.
“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18. Our words can bring healing to us so I spoke healing scriptures over my body and the symptoms.
By the end of the day I had the victory. Praise the Lord. One thing I realised from this is how we as Christians don’t have much confidence in our words. We need to work on this weakness for it could save our life or that of another one day. We need to speak as those who do have authority and believe who God says we are and speak with words of power. Sometimes when I hear people address the enemy I can see why nothing changes as you can hear that they don’t really believe what they are saying, for there is no authority in their words.
Jesus was training His Disciples to get to the place where they were thinking and speaking like Him. Not just calling out for help when they were in trouble but speaking to their problems as Jesus would have and expecting results.
“So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” Mark 11:22-24
Some margins say that we should have the faith of God, or the God kind of faith, instead of having faith in God. There is a lot of difference. Speak like He would to the mountain – believing. We have the power to speak to our problems as new creations in Christ.
Later we see Jesus sending out His disciples to minister and they all had amazing results. He said that He had given them authority to do these things. He didn’t say that they should pray for the sick, He said Heal the sick. What confidence. Demons are subject to us in Jesus name.
“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” Luke 19:10-11
We have fallen far short of what we are called to do in the earth now days. There are so many promises for those who believe. Not just believing that there is a God but believing that He is in us and speak as if He were speaking through us. As Peter says in 1 Peter 4:11
“If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.”
I have wondered why I am not able to be more effective in this area and believe I can see why. I realised that because I have been quite a comic all my life, I make a joke of most things and in the end my heart doesn’t believe in the words that I speak. My heart can’t tell if I believe it or not and so nothing seems to happen when I address my mountains.
For others it can be the harboring of unforgiveness that stops the power to move mountains as it says in Mark 11:25, and for others it’s a negative spirit. I have also realised that there can be the problem of saying too much. Our prayers can be shotgun prayers and all over the place instead of laser sharp.
“In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise.” Proverbs 10:19
The bible also says that if our consciences condemn us then we won’t have courage when we pray. 1 John 3:20-24. We need to make sure that there is not something the Lord wants us to put right if we want to have a mountain removing ministry.
We need to come to the place where we know what the will of God is and insist that the enemy flees. John 10:10 tells us that the work of the Devil is to steal from us and Jesus has come to give us an abundant life and we need to be fully persuaded of this otherwise we will have the ‘Doris Day Doctrine’. She was famous for her song ‘ Whatever will be will be.’
As Christians the bible teaches us to be careful with our words and use them to speak life. We are God’s Children, called to be Kings and Priests unto God. The bible says; “Where the word of a king is, there is power; And who may say to him, “What are you doing?” Eccl 8:4
When we really know this we will be fully persuaded in our warfare against Satan. I can see that we are living far below our station as Children of God and have a Victim mentality instead of a Victor mentality. We have the authority and Demons are subject unto us, stop being deceived.
We need to believe in the power of our words, and that also includes the words of the Holy Spirit when we speak in tongues. Even if we don’t understand them, they are still the words of God. Don’t just rattle them off but try and speak them out with more confidence and power – believing.
If you really believed that what you were saying will come to pass then you would be more careful about what you were saying.
