New Testament Levites

The bible says that we Christians are now part of a Royal Priesthood called to serve God. You couldn’t be a Priest or Levite in OT days unless you were from the Tribe of Levi, but ‘Praise God’ we are now part of the Royal Priesthood through our union with Christ and that includes the Priestly Tribe of Levi.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9.

“To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” Revelation 1:5-6

As God’s New Testament Levites we are to be a people who love and serve the Lord, His people and also love His word. The OT Levites were sold out for God and did nothing else but served God in the Temple and in the community. The Levites were the ones who carried the ARK of God from place to place, as Israel travelled through the Wilderness. In these days we are those have Christ in us, we too are to carry God’s presence wherever we go. We need to realise that we have the presence of God in our hearts and can change the spiritual atmosphere.

“Then David said, “No one may carry the ark of God but the Levites, for the LORD has chosen them to carry the ark of God and to minister before Him forever. “       I Chronicles 15:2-4 2

It was the responsibility of the Levites of old to carry the Ark of God which contained His presence when they shifted camp. No one else could do it. They were set apart for this awesome purpose. The Ark was a type of God’s Presence.

Once in the OT David left the Ark of God on the property of Obed Edom for 3 months and everything Obed had was blessed.

“The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed him and his entire household.” 2 Samuel 6:11

It’s important for us to know who we are in Christ and what a wonderful blessing it is to carry Him in our lives. Knowing that we carry the presence of God is an awesome responsibility and should not be treated lightly. Levites of old, were to be totally sold out for God and were to have no idols in their lives. Their lives were to only express their love for God and no other.

Unfortunately we can be careless Christians who encourage others to do things that are not pleasing to God. The presence of God is not something that is valued. In the book of Ezekiel chapter 44 we read of two types of Levites who served in the Temple. One group were not pleasing God and encouraged others to serve idols. They were still allowed to work in the Temple but they were not allowed into God’s presence, for they didn’t teach God’s people the difference between what is holy and defiled.

God’s plan for us is to be those who are a clear witness. Those who love His presence and carry Him with us wherever they go, changing the spiritual atmosphere. It also says in Ezekiel 44 that they were to have no inheritance in the land, for the Lord was their inheritance.

My question to you is. “Is the Lord your inheritance or do you have your feet in both camps?”  As God’s Levite, you need to be sold-out for God and not double minded. We need to be giving a clear message to all those around us that we are indeed God’s Children. If we do, He will entrust us with the privilege of carrying His presence with us wherever we go.

We don’t want to be like the Laodicean Church that was lukewarm. Being lukewarm is a mixture of hot and the cold. A lover of God and a lover of the world. It says that this makes God sick.

“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” Revelation 3:15-16

Let’s take our ministry of being a Levite more seriously and value His presence with such intensity that even our shadows will heal the sick and casts out demons.

“Sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow would fall across some of them as he went by! And crowds came in from the Jerusalem suburbs, bringing their sick folk and those possessed by demons; and every one of them was healed.” Acts 5 15-16

Peter carried the presence of God with him where ever he went and this was evident when passing by sick people for they were healed by the power of God.
